The Speaker, Imo State House of Assembly, Benjamin Uwajumogu, has urged eligible members of the state to collect their permanent voters cards (PVC) in order to be able to defend their electoral right.
He also called on those who have not registered to ensure they do so as soon as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) begins its continuous voters registration exercise from November 12-17.
INEC commenced the PVC distribution on Friday and scheduled it to last till Sunday.
While addressing reporters shortly after collecting his PVC at his Umuikpu ward in Ihitte-Uboma council area of the state, Uwajumogu said the card was a the only weapon the people could use to defend their electoral rights and choose their leaders.
He also tasked INEC on the importance of voter education and sensitization among the rural populace stressing that the beauty of democracy remained in the wider participation of the people in the electoral process.
Uwajumogu, who has declared his intention to become the next senator Okigwe Zone on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), added that the exercise was a great opportunity for people of the state to re-write the wrongs of their past political leadership by trooping out en-mass to register and also collect their voter cards.
Meanwhile, in the spirit of this year’s Imo state Civil Service Week, members of the state workforce has conferred an award of excellence on the Speaker.
Presenting the award at the main bowl of Dan Anyiam stadium, venue of the grand finale of the week-long exercise, the state Head of Service, Mr. Callistus Ekenze, who appreciated the good leadership efforts of the Speaker in ensuring enduring stability in the state Assembly, disclosed that the award was at the instance of the great input the Speaker has made towards ensuring that Imo Assembly continues to blaze the trail in lawmaking business in the country.
Uwajumogu, in his response, thanked the workers for appreciating the efforts of the present administration in ensuring the creation of conducive atmosphere for the workers to enhance their productivity.
While appreciating the workers for the successful completion of this year’s Civil Service Week, the Speaker, assured them that the state Assembly would always pursue and support policies and programmes aimed at improving the welfare of the entire state workforce.
He however, enjoined workers in the state to reciprocate the friendly disposition of the state government towards their overall welfare and ensure dedication to duty to achieve the needed topmost productivity.
