Kaduna Airport
The control tower at Kaduna Airport has been seriously damaged by a mysterious fire outbreak.
The inferno, which was caused by a high power electric voltage from the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), completely damage the tower beyond repairs, reports say.
Eyewitness told newsmen the fire started at about 3pm on Sunday and was raged on till the control tower was razed down.
A staff of the Airport, who did not want his name mentioned, said “the fire started as a result of high electric supply from PHCN. Nobody could even go near the tower because of the effect coming from the burning control tower. We had to run for safety first.”
“The tower has been razed down completely, it cannot be used again” said the staff.
Only last year October, an IRS Airline plane with 89 passengers on board narrowly escape crashing after developing a hydraulic fault, leading to an assisted landing at the same Kaduna Airport.
Reacting to the development, the General Manager, Corporate Communications of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr. Yakubu Dati announced the closure of the airport after the fire incident at the control tower.
“The Kaduna Airport has been temporary closed down following a minor fire incident at the control tower, which has since been brought under control with no casualties.
“A NOTAM has been issued following the prompt response of fire and rescue personnel at the airport.
“The NCAA, AIB, NAMA and other relevant agencies have since mobilised to site as investigation into the cause of the fire has commenced,” said Datti.
