out going IGP Muhammad Abubakar
All is set for the appointment of a new Inspector General of Police who will succeed the out going IGP Mohammed Abubakar who would bow out of office Thursday.
This development has seen some top senior police officers shortlisted for the top position with any of them set to be appointed subject to the Presidency and Police Council’s approval.
Top on the list of potential successors to IGP Abubakar include AIG Solomon Arase, Force Intelligence Bureau; AIG Suleiman Abba, AIG for Zone 7; Dan Azumi Doma, force secretary; and DIG Michael Zuokumor.
The City Reporters gathered that AIG Suleiman Abba in charge of Zone 7 is favourite to get the nod over other contenders because of the pressure from some interest groups from the not who see him as favourite.
His affinity with the out going IGP also is said to be the advantage he has over others as Abubakar will not hesitate one bit to nominate him if given the chance.
The Force secretary Doma is also being mooted as a quality successor to the out going IGP because of the experienced he has acquired occupying sensitive positions in the force.
Jigawa State born Arase also has worked closely with several IGPs in the Force Headquarters and has a track record of loyalty to constituted authority making him a strong contender for the top position. He is said to have held positions in the presidency in the past and may just get the blessing of some powerful influences in the Presidency.
The recently promoted DIG Zoukomour who presently heads the operations of the force is also a strong contender for the top position because of his powerful connection in the presidency. It has been mooted that he might be retired along with Abubakar, but his recent promotion to the rank of DIG on January 15, 2014, by the Police Service Commission, could be a move to position him for the top job.
Until his promotion, Zuokumor was the AIG in charge of Zone 4, Makurdi.
