Flood rakes havoc in Edo, 116 houses destroyed, several families displaced

No fewer than 116 houses and several properties worth millions of naira have been destroyed by a rampaging flood in Edo State. 

The incident which happened at the weekend at Fugar, the administrative headquarters of Etsako local government area of the state however did not witness any casualties.

Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, who was represented by his deputy, Mr. Pius Odubu, visited the scene of the flood, Thursday for an on-the-spot assessment and assured the people that relief materials will soon be brought to ameliorate their discomfort.

Oshiomhole expressed shock at the level of damage done by the disaster but however assured the people that the state government will do its best as soon as it can, to remedy their plight.

“The Edo State government will approach the federal government for assistance through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA),” he said.

He was accompanied to the area by the commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs, Lucky James; special adviser on special duties and executive director of the Office of the First Lady, Hajia Maimuna Momodu, and other key government functionaries.

He also visited the palace of the Ogie Aviawu of Aviawu, Chief Jackson Etonakha, where over 1,000 houses were destroyed alone and several families displaced.

Osiomhole who was moved by the level of damage by the flood in Aviawu, described it as unprecedented in the history of community.

The areas worst hit include Ivinone, Ulumohie, Iviocha and Iviavia, all in ward one, Etsako Central.
