Gubernatorial candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) for the November 16 Anambra governorship elections, Chief Leonard Uchendu has been kidnapped.
It was learnt that Uchendu was kidnapped in the early hours of Sunday in Awka the state capital.
The incident has been confirmed by his party but the Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Frank Mba declined comment on the matter and referred our correspondence to the Anambra State PPRO, Mr. Chukwuemeka Eze.
When contacted, Mr. Eze said he is in the middle of an important meeting. A text message has been sent to his mobile lines and he is yet to respond as at press time.
Already, there were allegations of ineptitude on the part of police in swinging to action.
The Anambra State chairman of the party, Lady Virgy Chukwuogor, said the circumstances surrounding Uchendu’s abduction was worrisome.
She said members of NNPC were surprised when the security personnel attached to the governorship candidate were recently withdrawn, thereby putting him at great security risk.
Chukwuogor was quoted in the media as saying that despite complaints to the state Police Command, nothing was done as the candidate did not have any security operative attached to him before the abduction.
As at the time of this report, no demand for ransom had been made by his abductors.
